Whatâs âthe toughest thingâ for Jalen Hurts after loss?
Eight NFL teams will play in Divisional Weekend games on Saturday and Sunday to determine which four will take the next step toward Super Bowl LVIII.
The Philadelphia Eagles are not among them.
“The toughest thing about all of this right now is someone else is going to win the world championship,” Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts said on Wednesday evening, “and there’s a lot of motivation in that in itself, and there’s going to be a lot of reflection on that internally so I can be the best that I can be to not only operate at a high level on the field but just lead the guys. …
“There’s a thrill in not being satisfied. There’s a thrill in not accomplishing something because it drives you that much more to get it done. And so, that’s the worst of it all is someone else is going to hoist that trophy up and someone else is going to be world champions, but it just simply wasn’t our time.”
Philadelphia’s 2023 season ended on Monday night with a 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the NFC playoffs.

“I know I come from places that have a very high standard,” the former Alabama QB said, “and this is a place that has a very high standard. Winning is what matters. Every day I come here, every day we come here as a team, it is to do that.”
While the Buccaneers advanced to a Sunday matchup against the Detroit Lions, the Eagles moved into the offseason. But Hurts told the reporters gathered at his locker on Wednesday there’s no time to rest given the outcome for Philadelphia this season.
“The desire to win is so strong, but that desire means nothing if the work is not being put in,” Hurts said. “And so that’s what we’re back to – back to putting the work in, back to preparing for the next opportunity to go out there and do what needs to be done. …
“The reality is it’s already begun. The journey for this next year has already begun. The eagerness and the passion for that is only enhanced that much more.”
In the 2022 season, the Eagles won the NFC championship before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII. Hurts finished second in the voting for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award.
In 2023, Hurts set a franchise record for touchdown responsibility with 23 TD passes and 15 rushing TDs. But Philadelphia won three fewer games than in 2022 and bowed out three rungs earlier in the postseason.
“I think truly every year demands a new version of a person, a new version of leadership,” Hurts said, “and I think this year has taught me so much in terms of the many blessings and lessons that have come with it. The first thing that you do is you look yourself in the mirror and you look at what you could have done better at – how you could have led better, how you could have executed better – and those are all things that internally light a fire in me.”
The Eagles won 10 of their first 11 games in the 2023 season. But because Philadelphia finished with six losses in seven games, including the playoff defeat, speculative vultures began circling coach Nick Sirianni’s job.
Hurts had been asked about Sirianni’s status at his press conference after Monday night’s loss, and he was asked again on Wednesday in the Eagles’ locker room.
“You asked me something about it the other day, and what’d I say?” Hurts said about Sirianni returning. “I didn’t even know that was a thing. I had no idea that was a thing, so I don’t see why that wouldn’t be the case. We plan on fixing everything we’ve done and growing together – coach Sirianni, (offensive coordinator) Brian (Johnson), everyone.”
